Before class started, I went over the chapter one more time just to be sure I was prepared for the quiz we were going to take in class. I always have a hard time getting into class for some reason. The Zoom code takes a while for it to work so I get into class late on occasion. It just so happened that I got into class a few mins late on test day. The test was fairly easy and I think I got the bonus questions right, so that is really helpful for my grade. After the test, we went over the answers and I got them all right for the most part. After we went over the test, we were put into breakout rooms to work on our Lysistrata academy. This academy was to bring groups together that had problems with each other. Each group had to answer the question, “What would your school need to do to train students to perform the following behaviors well? Select one behavior/question for each group and consider how (1) the subject matter(what you study), (2) the types of teacher, (3) the kinds of assignment, (4) the methods of grading and, (5) a final project would ensure that each student learned the given behavior.” My group chose question four which was, “At this school, how would students learn the best approaches to supporting one another and staying focused on their mission?” We had to use the first question stated before this one to answer the current question. For the first question, the subject matter, we said the students should study leadership qualities and things that should not be said when people come to them for support. The students should know when it is the right time for certain things, such as when it is time to joke and when it is time to be serious. For the second question, The types of teachers, we said that teachers who actually want to be at work and teach are the ones who love what they do enough to actually try to impact their student’s lives. Those teachers should also be patient and be willing to help their students (show good mentorship qualities). The third question, the kinds of assignments, we said the students should read about people who can influence them, preferably someone who has a past with supporting others. This would inspire the students to act like the person they are studying in order to support each other. For the fourth question, the methods of grading, we thought that peer grading would work the best for these students. Getting feedback from those who are in the same age range and mental capacity would help the students take the criticism of their work better. Of course, the teacher would give a final grade after the peer grading takes place. For the last question, the final project, a group project that highlights each individual’s talents would work the best so no one is left feeling less superior than their groupmates. If everyone receives the same grade for the project, it would motivate the students to motivate each other to do their part of the project. After we finished our breakout rooms, everyone came back and one group had the time to talk about their academy and its rules. After this professor took time to give his reflection on death after his father’s death.

This was a new week which means we had a new chapter to read for the week. We read Philoctetes which took place in athens in 409 BCE. His name means “He who is more dear than a possession” the possession inthis case would be his bow. The war between Athens and Sparta had been going on for ten years and Athens was losing badly. The only thing that could save Athens would be Philoctete’s bow. Odysseus and Neoptolemus went to find Philo to get his bow to win the war. Philo had been left on an island by himself for 10 years because of a snake bite & he was no use to the Athenians. Odyyssues wanted Neo to trick Philo by making him think that Neo left Athens and hated Odyyssues. Neo did not like the idea of lying to Philo since lying brings bad honor. Odyysseus is a psychopathic leader and was trying to lead Neo down the wrong path to get what he wanted. In class, we talked about Study habits and how to improve on them. I believe this is because our last quiz grades were not up to par. This week's lesson was also on dehumanization. We talked about the five scenarios which would cause us to dehumanize someone. They are: When we have power over them ( like Odyysseus had over Neo), When we harm them, when we witness them being harmed (This could relate to Philo’s snake bite on his foot), whenwe regard them as a member of an outgroup (an outcast), and when we regard them as physically disgusting. We went back to the mentor/ mentee mindset to see how Odyysseus and Philo differed in the mentor role.
